MK Yaakov Asher (United Torah Judaism), chairman of the Knesset Constitution Committee, said on Thursday that UTJ has not yet decided whether to support the application of sovereignty in Judea and Samaria.

In an interview with the Kikar Hashabbat website, Asher said that the haredi public “is neither right nor left, we act according to the Torah. The same goes for the application of sovereignty which is promoted in coordination with the United States. Ahead of the decision we will bring the issue before our rabbis.”

UTJ was opposed to a clause in the coalition agreement with the Likud, which requires the haredi party to support any position by the Prime Minister on the application of sovereignty.

Article 11 of the coalition agreement states that "United Torah Judaism undertakes to support every position of the Prime Minister, which is coordinated with the United States, and is directly or indirectly related to the application of sovereignty in the government and/or the Knesset, including in the Knesset committees and in votes in the Cabinet or the Knesset plenum.”

Globes journalist Tal Schneider reported that the words "coordinated with the United States" were incorporated into the agreement following the demand of MK Moshe Gafni, chairman of the Degel Hatorah faction of UTJ.
