FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro praised Joseph “Yosi” Azan, 45, the husband and father of the victims who perished in a house fire in Brooklyn Monday morning.
Azan was critically injured while saving two of his six children from the fire which broke out overnight in their house in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.
His wife, Aliza, 39, and three of their children, Moshe, 11, Yitzchak, 7, and Henrietta perished in the blaze.
Nigro told reporters that Azan "was severely burned trying to get back in to save the rest of his family, the ones that he didn’t already save. We believe that he acted very courageously and tried desperately.”
“Hopefully it didn’t cost his life also, but it may.”
Azan and two of his children are being treated at Staten Island University Hospital and are in critical condition.
Two other children are being treated in another hospital with less severe injuries. They escaped when they heard the smoke detectors go off.
Authorities are investigating whether the blaze was caused by a Hanukkah menorah which may have still been burning late into the night.
The Azans moved to Brooklyn from Israel and recently celebrated a son's Bar Mitzva.
