Israeli Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon (Kulanu) announced on Sunday that National Insurance Institute payments for disabled people would increase by 50% over the next four years.
The current monthly payment for a disabled person is 2,342 NIS per month. Minimum wage is 5,000 NIS.
Under the plan, the government would add 4 billion NIS to the disability budget over the next four to five years, until the payments reach 3,800 NIS per month, constituting a 50% increase.
The initiative comes after disabled Israelis waged an extended protest, spreading the slogan, "A disabled person is not half a person" and insisting the government raise disability payments to match minimum wage and allow the country's disabled citizens to live honorably.
Over 200,000 Israelis currently receive disability benefits.
