An IDF soldier was arrested on suspicion of incitement Monday, after allegedly threatening to follow in the footsteps of Yigal Amir.
Amir, the assassin of prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, is currently serving a life sentence for the 1995 politically-motivated murder.
Writing on Facebook, the soldier, a resident of central Israel, stated that "if a leftist comes to power, I promise and swear in my soul that I will become the next Yigal Amir."
The soldier was taken into custody by police Monday morning in Beersheva. A request for a remand hearing is expected.
During an interrogation carried out by both the military police and the Beersheva District Police, the soldier admitted writing the comments.
The Deputy Chief of Beersheva's police station, Ilan Shoshan, said that authorities were taking the charges seriously.
"The Police take a stern view of this event which constitutes a flagrant violation of [permissible] freedom of speech and legitimate protest that may influence the elections," he stated.
"Immediately upon receiving the notification [of the Facebook post], police opened an investigation into the matter. The police have zero tolerance for such statements will bring those responsible to justice," Shoshan added.
