Clashes between Israeli security forces and Arab rioters in Jerusalem's Old City have spilled over to a checkpoint outside Ramallah, amid heightened tensions as Jews celebrate the Sukkot holiday.

Violent Arab mobs attacked security forces on Monday, throwing stones and firebombs at Israeli police while barricading themselves inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque atop the Temple Mount.

Disturbances in Jerusalem's Old City continued on Tuesday as an Arab mob heckled Jewish visitors to the Western Wall.

The violence also made its way into Judea-Samaria on Tuesday, during a demonstration organized by Palestinian groups over Israel's defense against rioters on the Temple Mount.

The clashes outside Ramallah saw dozens of youths throw stones at Israeli soldiers, who responded with water cannon and rubber bullets, an AFP journalist reported.

Israeli police also said they had arrested 12 Arabs overnight Monday/Tuesday night in eastern Jerusalem, including several in connection with the clashes at the Temple Mount.

The latest round of violent rioting began amid Arab fears Israel will seek to allow Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount, despite Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's repeated commitment to the status quo there.
