Meretz chairwoman MK Zehava Galon on Sunday warned against the possible appointment of Jewish Home chairman Naftali Bennett as Education Minister, saying it would be a “dangerous” move.

"It is dangerous and irresponsible to entrust the Education portfolio in the hands of Naftali Bennett," Galon wrote on Facebook, a day after reports surfaced that Bennett had informed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that he wants to be named Education Minister.

"Last year outrageous data was released, according to which the Ministry of Education invested 56 million shekels in organizations that deal with the study of Jewish values compared to only 5.5 million shekels on those that promote democratic values. It is painful and frightening to imagine what those numbers will look like next year, if indeed Naftali Bennett will be appointed,” she continued.

"Bennett as Israel’s next Minister of Education would be very bad news for all those who fear for the future of the country and its image,” added Galon. "The good news is that we are here to drive him crazy. I'm going to monitor every shekel that comes out of the budget of the Ministry of Education, check exactly with which organizations he is communicating and on what trips he takes our children.”

"I will not hesitate to use all the tools at my disposal, including legal tools, to prevent Bennett from discriminating against the Arab and secular schools in favor of the state religious education system, which is already enjoying a surplus budget, and prevent him from dripping racist and inciting messages into classrooms and hearts of students," she threatened.

Earlier on Sunday, Jewish Home MK Yinon Magal said that Bennett had “fallen in love with the Education Ministry.”

"He is a man of vision. He understands that he must mentally force himself to connect to this thing, the program is not always as you requested," said Magal.

MK Ayelet Shaked, meanwhile, said that Bennett would turn the Education Ministry into a top post.
