Footage uploaded by the "Islamic State" (ISIS) shows fierce clashes in the Kurdish city of Kobane, along Syria's northern border with Turkey.

The devastation inside the town is almost total, and the stiff resistance still being put up by Kurdish forces can be seen even as ISIS pounds their position, as bullets whistle over the head of the cameraman and explosions hit just feet away.

Kobane, known in Arabic as "Ayn el-Arab" has been the scene of a desperate battle by Kurdish forces to fend off a steady advance by ISIS. After weeks of resistance, ISIS fighters finally penetrated the city's defenses yesterday and are now engaged in bloody street-fighting with the Kurdish People's Protection Unit (YPG), which has vowed its forces will fight to the death against the jihadis.

The last-ditch attempt to prevent an Islamist takeover saw the first Kurdish suicide bombing against ISIS forces yesterday.

YPG officials have lamented the ineffectiveness of US airstrikes around Kobane, saying they have had no discernible effect on ISIS's advance and have mostly consisted of bombing empty buildings.
