It was reported this afternoon that an Israeli soldier, St.-Sgt. David Gordokal, 21, of Bat Yam, was killed in last night\'s offensive in Ramallah. The IDF completed a major offensive in southwestern Ramallah this morning, in which it captured several wanted terrorists. The offensive came in response to last night\'s murder of Jerusalem resident Meir Weishaus, 23 (see below). Infantry, air, and armored forces took part in the operation, which resulted in a heavy exchange of fire. PA Intelligence Chief Toufik Tirawi called upon all residents of PA areas to take to the streets against IDF forces attempting to enter autonomous areas. He praised the efforts of those who shot at IDF forces in Ramallah last night.
The army has taken up positions around Jenin and Jericho for most of the past week, but this morning\'s attack on PLO command posts in Ramallah was significantly more intensive. One terrorist was reported killed. Just north of Ramallah, Beit El was closed to all traffic this morning while Arabs initiated an exchange of fire with IDF soldiers; an Israeli bus was hit, but no one was injured.
The funeral of Meir Weishaus, 23, set out this afternoon from the Satmar Beit Medrash in Meah She\'arim to Jerusalem\'s Har HaMenuchot cemetery. Weishaus was murdered last night when Palestinian terrorists shot at his car on the Ramot-French Hill highway, a well-traveled route from central to northern Jerusalem. The Arabs shot from a car going in the opposite direction, in the first attack of this nature so close to central Jerusalem. Meir Weishaus\' young widow, in her ninth month of pregnancy, was taken to the hospital after she reported feeling ill.
