23-year-old Meir Weisshouse was killed in a Saturday night shooting attack in the capital.

At about 11:20pm, shots were fired at a Renault Express traveling on Route 9 in the capital, between the Ramot and French Hill neighborhoods. The gunfire struck Weisshouse in the chest, wounding him critically. A second male in the car was lightly wounded. Meir was transported to the trauma unit of Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem where he was taken into emergency surgery. Doctors struggled to stabilize his condition but he succumbed to his wounds at about 2:00am.

The gunfire came from a passing car that was traveling towards Ramot. The area roads were shut down while police implemented a manhunt but the terrorists were not apprehended.

The attack marked the first time anyone was hit by gunfire on the local road. There were isolated incidents of shooting on the road in the past, but from a stationary location and not from a passing vehicle. Jerusalem Police Chief Mickey Levy reported at least two persons were in the terrorist vehicle, adding automatic gunfire was directed at the victims’ vehicle, with at least six bullets striking the car.

Police and the GSS (General Security Service – Shin/Bet) are checking for a possible connection between the fatal shooting attack and the arrest of a terror cell in nearby Beit Hanina during recent weeks.

Funeral service arrangements to be announced.
