MK Elon, an ordained rabbi and the former Dean of Yeshivat Beit Orot in Jerusalem, says that the growth was discovered lacing his vocal cords late last month. He reported the discovery to his party colleagues, who were then in the midst of intensive negotiations with the National Religious Party about the formation of the joint list.
Elon, who heads the Moledet Party, which is the largest of the three parties comprising the National Union, is the leader of the National Union list. He received the #1 spot on the joint list that was formed this month with the NRP, though NRP leader Zevulun Orlev had wanted to head the list. The matter was one of several that delayed the formation of the joint list for 2-3 months.
Elon does not plan any major changes in the hectic campaign schedule of the coming five weeks. "I am convinced that I will be able to work," he said. "I might be a little tired, but there's no time now to take time off. Maybe after the elections I'll take a little vacation."
Elon - Binyamin ben [son of] Ruth - said he has been hoarse for the past several months, and when he noticed that it was not improving, he was referred to a voice and speech specialist. "He had a camera go over my throat," Rabbi Elon told Yediot Acharonot, "and I could see on the video screen a white layer on top of the vocal cords. The doctor said that though in 97% of the cases, it's an infection or scar or some such, but wanted to take a biopsy just to be sure."
MK Elon was operated on in Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikvah at the end of January, and a week later was informed that the growth was malignant. "They did a CAT-scan," Elon said, "and found that it was local and had not spread." The Knesset Member will undergo a 20-minute radiation session every day, except on Sabbath. "Except for those 20 minutes," he said, "I plan to continue my regular schedule."
Elon, a three-term MK and former Tourism Minister, is the author of the "Right Road to Peace" plan. The plan calls for the dissolution of the Palestinian Authority, Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria, and the granting of Jordanian citizenship to Arab residents of those areas. The NU/NRP platform, however, makes no mention of the plan, as it is identified with the "transfer of Yesha Arabs" plan, which is taboo in most circles.
The son of the former Deputy President of the Supreme Court Menachem Elon, and brother of Rabbi Moti Elon of Yeshivat HaKotel in Jerusalem, MK Benny Elon has said that his goal is to become Justice Minister.
