A Kassam rocket was fired late Thursday night from Gaza into the western Negev. The “Red Dawn” early warning system alerted residents of the incoming missile. The rocket landed in an open area between the southern Israeli communities Netivot and Sderot.

Just a few hours later, a mortar shell was fired at an IDF base just outside of the Gaza strip Friday morning. No injuries or damages were reported in either incident.

Israel Radio reports that the IDF is investigating the apparent shooting of a nine-year-old Arab girl overnight Thursday near the Kissufim crossing along the Gazan border. The IDF claims forces spotted an individual carrying a large bag near the security fence. Forces ordered the person to stop and fired a warning shot into the air before eventually firing at the individual.

In Samaria, Arabs fired on Thursday evening at IDF soldiers west of Ramallah. The assailants missed their targets. The incident was the second shooting in the area in a week.

IDF forces arrested 15 wanted terrorists overnight Thursday throughout the provinces of Judea and Samaria. Terrorists from Fatah, Hamas, and PFLP were arrested in and around Shechem (north of Jerusalem), the largest Arab city in Israel and the home of Joseph’s tomb.

According to Army Radio, four Fatah members were arrested north of Ramallah, and eight Hamas members were arrested in and around Hevron, where Jewish residents face expulsion from 11 homes in the former Hevron marketplace in the middle of next week.

Reports Friday morning that the IDF would once again seal the Jewish community as a closed-military zone before the Sabbath were false. A Hevron spokesman suggested that the closure will be delayed until after the Sabbath.

Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert instructed the defense establishment last week to expedite the expulsion of Jewish residents from the Hevron marketplace and the destruction of Jewish homes in Amona, near Ofra. In addition, Olmert told ministers and senior officials he wants the pace of construction of the partition fence expedited as well.

Opponents of the acting prime minister fear that he intends to use the fence to set Israel’s new borders. Government officials have repeatedly stated that the fence will serve as a security barrier and not a political border.
