The soldier, Sgt. Nir Kahane, 20, of Kiryat Tivon, was stabbed by the local Arab, who approached the checkpoint, drew a knife and slashed at the soldier’s neck. He was treated at the scene by Magen David Adom medics but succumbed to his wounds.
Binyamin Brigade Commander Mickey Edelstein said that the attack was an exploitation of humanitarian gestures of Israel.
The terrorist, from a Ramallah area village, was apprehended at the scene and was taken in for investigation.
The Al Aksa Brigades terror group, affiliated with the Palestinian Authority’s ruling Fatah movement, took responsibility for the attack.
Shortly after the stabbing, though unrelated, Israel’s Air Force fired a missile into a building in Beit Lahiya, in northern Gaza, killing at least two Arab terrorists belonging to the Al Aksa Brigades – one terror chief Iyad Mahmad Abdullah Kadas. Kadas was involved with planning dozens of terror attacks including suicide bombings and shooting attacks in cooperation with the Popular Resistance Committee and Hamas. He served as the assistant to Hassan Mad'hun, a senior terrorist in the group who was killed in an IDF operation last month. His residence, according to the IDF spokesman, was used to manufacture protective vests for terrorists and to recruit terrorists for suicide attacks and rocket launchings.
This is the second targeted killing of terrorists by the IDF in as many days.
IDF Training Accident
In a training accident earlier Thursday, IDF Sergeant Avi Siag from Tel Aviv, was killed when the armored personnel carrier he was riding in overturned during an exercise near Israel’s border with Egypt. Two other soldiers were injured in the accident as well.
