MK Dr. Phyllis Starkey also said Wednesday in the House of Commons that the Golan Heights is "occupied Syrian territory." No opposition was reported to her remarks and those by the British Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East, Dr. Kim Howells. He agreed that the security fence "is very effective and has cut to a remarkable extent the number of suicide bombs," but added, "This is an illegal activity."
Israel should be pressured to open up crossings and stop building the security fence, asserted MK Starkey. "Britain and the European Union must use every bit of leverage that they have, including financial leverage, to pressure the Israelis to stop expropriating Palestinian land. For example, they could suspend the EU-Israel trade association," she said.
Describing her recent visit to Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) areas, she described the destroyed Jewish communities in the Gaza region as "dead bodies [left] for the Palestinians to clean up."
The House of Commons member's comments on Gaza suggested she considers it as an independent Arab state which she accused Israel of controlling. "They control the register of all births, and whom can be given Palestinian citizenship. That means that refugees who returned from Jordan after the Oslo agreement...are left in limbo with no citizenship whatsoever."
MK Starkey blamed Arab violence on Israel's building "the so-called security wall on Palestinian territory" and maintaining roadblocks. She did not mention last week's attack by Arab terrorists who took advantage of Israel's removal of roadblocks and murdered three young Israelis.
She said the roadblocks have left Arabs "with no hope of improvement and...that violence was the only way out."
She also criticized Israel's acceptance of the Golan Heights as part of the country's borders. "I was given the national parks authority map, which shows Israel including, without any internal borders whatsoever, all the Palestinian territory and the Golan Heights, which are occupied Syrian territory." She added that Israel "needs to understand that [the borders] are not accepted by anyone else."
MK Dr. Howells told the House of Commons that during his visit last month to Ramallah, local Arabs told him of corruption under Yasser Arafat. He said "it was heartening...that there is no more talk of Arafat as some kind of unblemished hero."
However, he did not speak of current PA corruption, which the United States has admitted is rampant. Dr. Howells added, "We want Israel to have the right to exist and to defend its citizens; we do not want them to walk in fear of terrorists. I believe Abu Mazen wants that as well. He is the only show in town."
