A cornerstone for a new synagogue was placed in Germany yesterday, on the ruins of a synagogue that was destroyed on Kristallnacht. The renewed house of worship - the Kamenitz Synagogue, in Saxony - will be funded equally by the local municipality and contributions, at a total cost of over $4 million. Its predecessor was one of 101 synagogues that were destroyed on Nov. 9, 1938, when organized gangs of Nazi youth roamed through Jewish neighborhoods breaking windows of Jewish businesses and homes, burning synagogues and looting. Almost 7,500 Jewish businesses were destroyed, and 26,000 Jews were arrested and sent to concentration camps; Jews were physically attacked and beaten, and 91 died.
