In contrast to the common assumption that a quiet classroom reflects the best learning environment, new research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem shows the opposite: successful learning takes place in \"non-quiet\" classrooms, where noise reflects enthusiasm and curiosity. Dr. Gad Yair of HU\'s School of Education and M.A. student Golan Fadida-Peleg analyzed 483 learning experiences that adults recalled from their school days, and found that informal and even \"chaotic\" settings produced the most meaningful learning experiences. The results indicated that good learning experiences result from instructional methods that use competitions; use of skills; free choice of activity; and more. Overall, it was indicated that when instruction is at its peak, students are not sitting quietly or placidly, but are rather calling out with enthusiasm. The research also emphasizes deep commitment of teachers and special teacher-student relationships as important aspects in meaningful learning. For more information, write to
