More details on the thwarted suicide attack in Beersheva on which we reported yesterday have now been learned. Three Arabs were arrested yesterday and last night by police and GSS agents in Tel Sheva, a Bedouin village in the south of the country. Police said that the arrests prevented a major suicide attack that was to be carried out in Beersheva, “capital of the Negev,” during the coming days. Also captured was an explosives-laden vest and other explosive devices used by suicide bombers. The attack was to have targeted a crowded shopping center in the city. The suspects revealed during interrogation that the bomber had actually postponed the attack at least once, after arriving at the intended target and deciding that there were not enough potential victims around.

Initially arrested were a PA resident and a Bedouin homeowner who was harboring him. Interrogation of the PA resident, who has a long history of security-related offenses, eventually led to the apprehension of the suicide bomber himself. Beersheva has been on high alert over the past days in anticipation of just such an intended terrorist attack.
