Antiochus forbade the Jews to offer sacrifices and forcing them to sacrifice unclean animals to the Greek idols. The Holy Temple was converted to a pagan temple, and all religious observances (Shabbat, holidays, keeping kosher, and circumcision) were prohibited. In168 B.C.E. the Greeks erected an idol on top of the alter and sacrificed a non-kosher animal on that holy spot.
