The Israeli karate team returned from the World Cup Championships in Sweden this month with six medals and an award for the best coach.
That Aryeh Nikar had earned his Best Coach title was very evident in the successes of the 11-person team he brought to the Karate World Cup Championships. The number of medals earned by the relatively small delegation stood out among the 780 competitors from around the world who took part in the competition.
Yarden Sharabi, 12 years old, earned the World Cup for sparring in the under-13 category in the over-40 kilogram weight class. She also won the silver medal for her performance in the kata (forms) competition.
Ro'i Tzur brought Israel the silver medal in the under-12, under 40-kilogram, sparring category.
The Israeli athletes won team medals as well. One silver and two (tied) bronze medals went to the Karate masters for their group efforts in the sparring competitions.
