Intec Pharma Ltd. has released the results of a successful clinical trial of the company's Accordion Pill, a novel gastro-retentive platform that channels and delivers drugs that must be absorbed by the body in what is known as the narrow absorption window - the intestine segment below the stomach.
The study was conducted at the Sheba Medical Center in Israel, using riboflavin (vitamin B2) as a model active ingredient to demonstrate the unique capability of the Accordion Pill to prolong absorption of pharmaceuticals into the blood.
The advantages of prolonged absorption enables greater distribution of the drug in a subject, while at the same time reducing dosage and side effects.
"The study results confirm Accordion Pill as the first gastro-retentive formulation to maintain controlled release and absorption of a drug for more than six hours following a low calorie meal," Intec Pharma CEO Efi Cohen-Arazi told Globes.
