As a matter of fact, it is Haifa University that has been grilling him for a while now.

Yuval Diskin, the new head of the Shin Bet, has emerged from this interrogation whistle clean, and the University will be awarding him his Master's degree—with distinction. He is one of 1,308 graduate students to receive the M.A. at a special ceremony on the University of Haifa campus today. The number of Master's degree graduates represents a 4% growth over last year's total.

Admiral David Ben-Baashat, commander of the Israeli Navy, will also be on campus, but not to do recruiting. Over his officer's uniform, he will also don cap and gown like other graduates.

Diskin completed the special M.A. program in national security studies offered in the Dept. of Political Studies. Ben-Baashat will receive an MBA from the University's School of Business Administration.

These two high-ranking officials represent the University of Haifa's very close ties with the Israel Defense Force and the Israeli security establishment. In addition to the graduate program in national security studies for officers, given in conjunction with the IDF National Security College, the University now also offers two undergraduate programs for defense personnel, one for Navy officers and the other for officers in the Intelligence Corps.

The top graduate prize, the Rector's Prize, goes to Nadav Efrati of the Dept. of Computer Sciences for his thesis, "Sparse Normalized Local Alignment." The Graduate Studies Dean's Prize for an Outstanding Thesis goes to Ms. Yifat Shahar, Dept. of Education, who examined "Youth with Developmental Handicaps—Borderline, Light Mental Deficiency—and Their Experiences in Harmful and Exploitive Situations: A Comparison with Normal, Non-Handicapped Youth."
