The poll was conducted Thursday night by the Maagar Mohot Survey Institute, headed by Professor Yitzchak Katz. Respondents answered the question, "Are you for or against withdrawal under fire in the disengagement plan?" Professor Katz said the question is different from most polls which have asked people if they are for against the plan, without giving them the opportunity to express their conditions for support.

The government claimed last year that there was no need to conduct a national referendum on the plan to force more than 9,000 Jews out of their homes because all polls showed that two-thirds of the public supported the plan.

After recent polls revealed that support has gone down from 65% in favor of the plan to 48- 52%, spokesmen for the Prime Minister's office said that government policy should not be made according to public polls.

The results of Katz' poll support claims that most of those who supported the government plan would oppose it if terrorists attack during the operation and if the Palestinian Authority (PA) does not halt terrorism in general.

Prof. Katz's survey was conducted shortly after extended rocket and mortar attacks struck Sderot and Gaza, and hours after the High Court rejected petitions appeals claiming that the plan is illegal.
