IDF statistics show that rockets attacks have increased most notably, with a total of 86 Kassams and mortar shells fired over this period towards Gush Katif and the western Negev. The residents counted about 20-30 more, but the army counts only those from which shrapnel was found. Miraculously, no one was hurt in these attacks.
Four attempts to smuggle explosives and suicide bomb vests from Shechem (in Samaria) and Bethlehem (in Judea) were thwarted in the past two weeks. Two of these incidents involved 14- and 15-year-old Arab youths, who were assigned the task of transporting the explosives through a military checkpoint.
Arutz-7's Haggai Huberman reports that the leader in perpetrating attacks during the period in question was Hamas, responsible for 58% of the terrorism. Hamas is expected to do well in the upcoming Palestinian Authority elections. US President George W. Bush is rather sanguine about the terrorist organization, saying last week that PA Chairman Abu Mazen need not close it down: "I don't think they're going to get elected, because I think Palestinian moms want their children to grow up in peace just like American moms want their children to grow up in peace. As a matter of fact, I think the people that campaign for peace will win."
On May 20, a multi-pronged attack in the Gush Katif community of Kfar Darom was thwarted by IDF forces. The plan had been to infiltrate the town and murder residents and/or soldiers, while at the same time anti-tank rockets and mortar shells were being fired at the town and nearby army positions.
Jerusalem Police announced last night that they had found the explosives that were to be detonated today in two locations in the capital. The double attack was to perpetrated simultaneously in a bus in the Ramot suburb and in a cafe in downtown Jerusalem. A synagogue was also considered for targeting. The suicide bombers themselves have not yet been apprehended, but several others of the Islamic Jihad cell are in custody. This is the same terrorist group that perpetrated the murderous attack in Tel Aviv four months ago in which five Jews were killed.
