Yoel Hason works as a civil servant heading up the Prime Minister's liaison affairs. At the same time, he is chairman of the Likud youth movement. The Civil Sevice Commission charged that Hason "has been grossly trampling the law," using the government facilities as his disposal for Likud party matters. Hason claimed that the civil service was discriminating against him, charging that government officials from other parties are doing the same, yet were not singled out by the commission.

The order to dismiss Hason comes amidst a new campaign by the government comptroller, who acts as government ombudsman, to stop the practice of politicians appointing party favorites to government jobs. Sharon's Likud party has borne the brunt of criticism.

Yisrael Katz, Likud Knesset Member and Agricultural Minister, was accused last week of illegally appointing two senior aides. Attorney General Menachem Mazuz said Katz's appointment "would never hold before the High Court of Justice."

Sharon's integrity was severely challenged last week when National Union party MK Aryeh Eldad convinced a Knesset committee to approve a bill calling for establishment of a parliamentary commission to investigate corruption in the government. "The state is sinking in the mud of corruption" Eldad charged. His proposal squeaked through the committee by a margin of one vote with the help of three anti-evacuation Likud MKs who absented themselves from the vote.

Sharon's family has been investigated for years on suspicion of various wrongdoings. While charges against Ariel Sharon were dropped last year for lack of evidence (against the recommendation of the State Prosecutor's office), his son Knesset Member Omri Sharon has been indicted on criminal charges, based on the Attorney-General's decision of this past February.

MK Ran Cohen (Metretz/Yahad) said at the time that charges were dropped against the Prime Minister, but "an indictment against Omri Sharon leads to Ariel Sharon. The court might judge the son, but the public will judge the father."
