The man aroused the suspicions of the security forces, who called upon him to stop and then fired in the air. He did not stop, and in accordance with procedure, they then fired directly at the man, killing him.

A wire leading to an explosive device was seen coming out of his pockets, but a check later found that the explosive was a fake. An investigation is underway to ascertain the man's identity and the circumstances of the incident.

Last summer, two Islamic terror groups claimed responsibility for a triple bombing attack in the same city - Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent - including one blast outside the Israeli Embassy. Three local residents were killed, including the bodyguard of Israeli Ambassador Tzvi Cohen.

This morning's attack may have been carried out in protest of a trial of 23 Muslim extremists taking place in eastern Uzbekistan.
