Among other damage done to the vehicles, their doors were glued shut, and they were defaced with pro-Gush Katif graffiti. Slogans spray-painted on the vehicles included, "Sharon is a Dictator," "We Will Never Leave" and "Gush Katif forever."
Police investigating the vandalism voiced suspicions that soldiers may have been involved, either actively or by turning a blind eye during the crime. Police explained that extensive damage was done to three tractors, four trucks and a steamroller in a facility that is supposedly under the watchful eyes of IDF soldiers and military surveillance equipment.
The vandalized vehicles were used in road construction activities in the area, including expanding lanes to facilitate the heavy traffic expected during the government's planned forced removal of Jews from Gush Katif.
Gaza Coast Regional Council spokesman Eran Sternberg released a statement regarding the reported vandalism, saying that he and his colleagues are not in any way connected to the incident, nor do they know who was involved. Sternberg condemned efforts to use today's incident of vandalism to depict all of the nearly two dozen towns of Jewish Gaza in a bad light. He further called for an immediate halt to ongoing efforts to delegitimize the Jews of Gush Katif.
