The Abdullah Shahid (Martyr) Brigade announced it was behind the 3:15 p.m. attack in which a terrorist blew himself up near a group of tourists behind a downtown museum. Ben-Tzion and Avital Smorzik of Haifa, both in their 50's, were lightly wounded, and have already returned to Israel. It was their first visit to Egypt, where Avital was born, since she left as a child. Five others, including tourists from Sweden and Italy, were also hurt.
The suicide bomber's body was found under a nearby bridge. Some eyewitnesses said he was being chased by security personnel when he jumped off the bridge and set off his explosive charge. He was suspected of being behind a terrorist attack in Cairo just a number of weeks ago.
In the second attack shortly afterwards, the suicide terrorist's sister and another woman fired at a tourist bus. The two then tried to commit suicide, with one killing the other and seriously injuring herself. No one on the bus was hurt.
The Israeli government has warned that Egypt is a high-risk area and that tourists should stay away. The terrorist group that claimed it executed Saturday's attack also was involved in last year's Sinai bombings that killed 34 people.
