Asked to comment on calls for "civil disobedience" by Knesset Member Aryeh Eldad (National Union) at yesterday's Gush Katif solidarity event, Eitam stated, "I am not responsible to comment on remarks made by others, including MK Prof. Aryeh Eldad.... He is an academic, my colleague, and will defend his own remarks."
Eitam was adamant in his defense of a non-violent public opposition to disengagement, however, a move he explained is necessary to "save thousands of families."
Addressing the tens of thousands who attended yesterday's rally, Eitam called on supporters to "leave your factories, places of work and schools" and come to Gush Katif with "[water] canteens, tents and shoes if they try to close off our brothers from us in the Gush." He called on Gush Katif supporters to greet soldiers peacefully and then walk around them: "If they close the roads to us, we will walk on dirt roads; if they close the dirt roads, we will walk through the fields."
Eitam blames Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's hard-hand tactics for his success in advancing the Disengagement Plan, pointing out Sharon "manipulated Israeli democracy and fired ministers" to achieve his goals. "A dictatorship is emerging as a result of ongoing efforts to limit democratic rights" he warned.
Echoing MK Eitam in his speech at Wednesday's event in Gush Katif, Chairman of the Judea, Samaria and Gaza Council, Bentzi Lieberman, said that the nation should continue to struggle against what he called the "siege" of Gush Katif: "If it is decided to place Gush Katif and northern Samaria under siege, then we will break it in any way possible, but without violence. The struggle will begin anywhere security forces will attempt to hold back the masses, even if that means that the struggle will be spread throughout the whole country."
MK Rabbi Benny Elon (National Union) declared during his speech that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is endangering lives and violating a divine covenant. "Sharon is committing two crimes," MK Elon said, "he is violating a covenant that God gave us as an eternal heritage and he is endangering lives by the very creation of a terrorist state."
Referring to the cemeteries in Gush Katif and Samaria, MK Elon said, "There are people here who paid a dear price. There is a cemetery here. In Damascus and in every place in the world there are Jewish cemeteries, but we have never heard of uprooting the graves of Jews."
Elon went on to say, "Even when the knife is on our chest, it does not prevent us from praying and asking for [divine] mercy. Every one of us must act with determination and dedication to save the nation from suicide and from this satanic [Disengagement] plan."
