New recruits will have the opportunity to do this while they complete the recruitment process at the IDF Recruitment Center at the start of their service. This initiative will commence with the July, 2005 recruits.
With over 180,000 potential donors, Ezer Mizion's national bone marrow registry is the largest Jewish registry in the world. To date, it has facilitated over 130 life-saving bone marrow transplants throughout the world.
Information leaflets will be sent to the homes of future recruits, prior to joining the IDF, explaining about the registry, its importance and the necessary procedures to register.
On recruitment day, new draftees will be shown a short film explaining the issue. Those who choose to join the registry will then fill in a short questionnaire and will give a blood sample that will be added to the national bone marrow database, in order to find suitable donors.
The IDF is pleased to be a part of this project and hopes that this agreement will significantly augment the national bone marrow registry and will thereby increase the chances of recovery for many patients.
The agreement between the IDF and Ezer Mizion was signed in a ceremony on Thursday, April 21st.
