Among the books being placed online are early editions of well-known books, reproductions of manuscripts and first editions, rare pamphlets and periodicals as well as collections of Torah commentary published in single editions – some of which have not been published in hundreds of years. An extensive and detailed subject catalog will enable easy access to the repository.
CDI Systems, which has published the library, will use its NetIS publishing platform. It uses new technology developed by CDI to enable material to be placed on the web without fear of the content being stolen.
Many rare books will also be made available through the project, which will make over four million pages available at the click of a mouse. The information is made available using various access models, based on predefined DRM (Digital Rights Management) profiles. Licensing options range from annual full-privilege subscriptions to limited usage privileges (e.g., the right to view content only, without the ability to print, save, or select for copy-and-paste). Limited usage relies on cumulative measuring of pages viewed from a selected book. Users can also purchase the rights to view or print an entire books.
CDI Systems, founded in 1992, is a privately owned software house, headquartered in Israel. Its online publishing solutions have been deployed throughout the world as part of interactive legal productions on CD-ROM, dynamic professional databases (on-line and handheld), newspapers, phone directories, electoral registries and encyclopedias.
