Tirawi informed PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) and Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia (Abu Ala) of his decision at a meeting in Ramallah last night. Tirawi cited Wednesday's shooting attack directed at Abu Mazen’s office as a prime example of the ongoing lack of law and order. Other incidents of unrest have occurred in the past two days as well, with Al-Aqsa Brigades gunmen causing much damage and destruction in restaurants and shops used by senior PA officials.
Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz recently said that regarding the long-awaited reforms in the Palestinian Authority, "there is a great divide between that which is said and that which is actually occurring."
In addition, IDF Military Intelligence Chief Brig.Gen. Aharon Ze'evi warned the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee this week that Abbas' efforts at reforms are being derailed by Abu Ala himself.
Abu Mazen is merely "hoping that the terrorist infrastructure will dissolve as he promotes a political process," Ze'evi said, and is not doing enough to actively dismantle the terrorists' infrastructures.
Abbas and Qureia are not on speaking terms, according to Gen. Ze'evi.
The violent riots of the past two days began after Abu Mazen gave the order to collect weapons from a group of men who holed themselves up in the Mukata headquarters in Ramallah.
