The attack occurred shortly after 2 AM when an IDF force, backed up by an Israel Police contingent, was on a routine mission in the El Omri refugee camp just south of Ramallah. Seeking to locate stolen cars and find those responsible, the force was on its way towards a house when a storm of gunfire was opened upon them. The Israelis returned fire, but two soldiers were seriously hurt, including one who was originally listed in moderate condition, and a soldier and policemen sustained injuries termed "light."

The wounded were evacuated to Hadassah Ein Karem by Magen David Adom ambulances. The army remained afterwards to comb the area for the shooters. PA sources said the incident could have been "criminal," and not "terrorist," but that they would search for the perpetrators in any event.

This was not the only incident of Palestinian terrorism recorded since the terrorist factions agreed on Thursday to a period of "calm." An Arab tried to grab the weapon of a Border Guardsman south of Jerusalem, and was shot and wounded for his efforts. In Shechem (Nablus), two incidents of shooting at IDF soldiers were recorded; no one was hurt, but an IDF vehicle was damaged.

Last night, Palestinian terrorists fired a mortar shell at the industrial zone of N'vei Dekalim. Slightly earlier, armed gunmen opened fire at an IDF position near Netzarim. No one was hurt in these incidents.
