Starting at 4 PM Israel time, a massive prayer service began, with the participation of former Chief Rabbis Avraham Shapira and Mordechai Eliyahu. The prayers were broadcast live (in Hebrew) on Arutz-7.
Nine classes and lectures were held througout the day at N'vei Dekalim's main synagogue. The classes addressed topics associated with the power of fasting, the significance of Purim, and the Land of Israel.
The emotionally charged prayers in Gush Katif asked for divine intervention to help prevent the Gaza withdrawal and the creation of a split within the Jewish nation. Prayers were accompanied by shofar blasts and the sounding of horns fit to be used in the Holy Temple.
Large prayer gatherings were held around the country, as well, including at the gravesites of the Arizal in Tsfat and Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in the Galilee, Telshe-Stone outside Jerusalem, Yeshivat HaGolan in Hispin in the Golan Heights, the hesder yeshiva in in Eilat, Yeshivat Beit El and elsewhere. Many Jews outside Israel participated in the fast as well.
