The camp was organized by Thailand, Israel and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
The Children and Youth Post-Tsunami Camp for Thai Survivors opened Monday, February 28, at Thailand's Kaoyai National Park. The one-week youth camp was a project of Thailand's Population and Community Development Association, in partnership with the JDC and the Embassy of Israel.
Forty survivors aged 16-23 participated in different activities at the camp, including meetings with psychologists, treatment by Israeli "Dream Doctors", hiking, sports, lectures, etc. The first group of campers was selected on the basis of having the most emotional need.
The "Dream Doctor" program from Israel is one of the most essential components of the camp activities. The "Dream Doctors" are physician-clowns who specialize in treating traumatized children and youth using humor. They have been successful in several Israeli hospitals in relieving children's suffering through the gift of laughter.
