In continuation of a policy announced by the PA chief prosecutor, a court in PLO-controlled Shechem handed down today another death sentence against an Arab accused of assisting Israel. The convicted man was charged with providing information which facilitated the liquidation of leading terrorist Mahmud Madani in Shechem several months ago.
Today\'s sentence is the fifth handed down this week against Arabs accused of assisting Israel. Commentators say that the new policy of holding expeditious trials of Arab “collaborators” with Israel is designed to sway Arab public opinion to support the Palestinian Authority. Arab crowds who were present in and around the court room broke out cheering upon hearing the sentencing.
PA death sentences require Yasser Arafat\'s signature in order to be carried out.
Arafat will meet with the leaders of the Islamic opposition groups today in Ramallah to explore the possibility of integrating them into the official PLO governing body. PA television broadcasts are issuing a call that the Palestinians must unite for a “struggle until victory.”
