The guards spotted two suspects outside The Stage nightclub before it opened up and pushed the suspects away. One of them responded by detonating his explosive charge, and the other escaped. Police still are investigating whether the second suspect was connected with the attack.
The bomber "was standing in the line when the bomb went off close to the entrance," said police spokesman Gil Kleiman.
One of the club's owners, David Pardes, said, "We were expecting 400 people for a karaoke evening, but by chance the club still was not open. After I heard a huge explosion, I saw that everything was full of smoke and the security guard was covered with blood."
Among the injured was an American visitor, Aryeh Sasson, 17, from New York. "I was at a store near the scene of the blast," he later said. "There was a lot of blood." At least two other Americans were also wounded in the explosion.
"There was a huge explosion and we just ran" said Merav Ayush, 20, who was injured from shrapnel although she had not yet reached the line outside the entrance.
The club's disc jockey, Yinon Cohen, treated some of the injured. He later said, "As we were preparing for the evening, the security men came upstairs covered in blood. I gave first aid to some of the wounded until ambulances came."
