According to a new umbrella organization call the Israel Life Science Industry, Israel is one of the leading players in the world life-science arena – particularly in the area of cardio-vascular developments.

Israel has 466 life science companies, with 80% of them founded within the past decade. Overall, the industry remains in its formative stage with about thirty percent of the companies in the seed stage and only 20 percent in the clinical stage. Since the year 2000, about 50 new companies have been founded each year.

More than half of the industry is comprised of medical device companies, with biotech companies making up 21%. The biggest area of industry focus, with 67 companies focusing solely on it, is the field of cardio-vascular research.

About a half of the medical device companies focus on therapeutic devices with the leading applications being in cardiovascular, oncology, neurology and neurodegenerative.

Israel is fourth in the world in biopharmaceutical patents per capita (trailing only the US, Switzerland and Denmark).
