Following the national camp's defeat in yesterday's Knesst vote on the disengagement, Former Minister Avigdor Lieberman (National Union) says, "The main issue is that the Prime Minister has failed in his leadership of the national camp. Seventeen of his party MKs didn't vote for his plan; this is unprecedented."

Lieberman said he believes Sharon will have difficulty being re-chosen to lead the Likud for the next national elections.

Sharon fired Lieberman, together with then-Minister Benny Elon, last June because of their opposition to the disengagement. Lieberman heads the Yisrael Beiteinu party, which joined with the National Union for the last election but split off again several weeks ago. Yisrael Beiteinu now plans to run on its own in the next election.

"Just [over] a year ago," Lieberman told Israel Radio today, "Sharon said that Netzarim is just like Tel Aviv. Later, he promised to honor the Likud party referendum, and he did not. He has lost his legitimacy as leader of the national camp – and the same is true of the leadership of the Likud. If they would have fought for their principles with the same zeal as they fought for their positions in the Likud party, things would have been very different."
