The new processor is called Cell, Yediot Acharonot reports, and will deliver ten times the performance of today’s PC processors. The prototype chip measures only 221 square millimeters (roughly a third of a square inch), integrates 234 million transistors, and is fabricated with 90-nanometer silicon-on-insulator technology.
The companies unveiled details about the new processor at a conference Tuesday, saying IBM Haifa’s Development Lab manager Moshe Molcho is heading a six-person Israeli team working on the new chip.
The Cell, under development since March 2001, will "deliver vastly improved, real-time response for entertainment and media-rich applications," the joint statement said.
The Cell chip will probably be available next year as Sony plans to use it in its PlayStation 3 game console.
