The party’s central committee will meet next week to decide the future name of the party.
During the faction’s meeting on Tuesday, the party’s Knesset members nearly unanimously supported the name-change – with only Yossi Beilin objecting. MK Yossi Sarid obstained.
The move to change the name back to Meretz was based on the results of a survey that found that 66 percent of left-wing voters have never heard of Yahad. Many of the respondents thought Yahad was the party headed by union-chief MK Amir Peretz – who in fact heads the One Israel party.
Yahad (an acronym for Yisrael Hevratit Democratit, or Social Democratic Israel), was the name chosen after a merger between party chairman Yossi Beilin's Shahar party and Meretz.
