In its January 11 editorial, the foremost Egyptian government-backed newspaper, Al-Ahram, explained, "There is no doubt that Abu Mazen has adopted the method of negotiations and has asked the Palestinian factions to abandon armed resistance." Yet, whatever method is chosen - negotiation or violence - the new leader has to focus on two things, according to the Egyptian daily:
1) "Uniting all Palestinian factions on this method;" and
2) "the effectiveness of such method in helping Palestinians to achieve the minimum part of their legitimate rights."
What constitutes that "minimum part of their legitimate rights" in the eyes of the Al-Ahram editors?
In part, it includes "the right of return for the Palestinian refugees, the establishment of the independent Palestine state, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the whole of Eastern Jerusalem, in order for it to be the capital of the Palestinian state, and drawing a clear-cut border between the Israeli and Palestinian states, where the latter will include all lands occupied in 1967."
