The shooting attack on Sunday night at about 9:30pm claimed the life of a Jewish woman and injured four others, including three family members and a hitchhiker.
Three Israeli vehicles were traveling on the Azzoun bypass road in the vicinity of the community of Alfei Menashe, not far from the PA area of Kalkilya. The vehicular convoy set out in compliance with IDF instructions to avoid driving alone but only in groups for added safety. The preliminary investigation indicates the shots were fired from a passing car but this has not yet been established with certainty.
All of the persons hit, the fatality and those wounded, were seated in one vehicle. In the first vehicle was Ginot Shomron resident Yair Gavish, who was lightly injured by glass shards in his face. He continued traveling to the entrance of Maale Shomron where he reported the attack and received medical care. Gavish reported the gunfire came from his right, from Azzoun, apparently from ditch. Azzoun is designated as area “B”, under PA civil and Israeli security control. This contradicts preliminary IDF findings that the gunfire came from a passing vehicle.
Ambulances arrived to the scene without delay. Paramedic Chaim Chatalan was among the first responders, arriving in his private vehicle. He explained that advanced life support efforts to save the wife/mother were in vain. After it became apparent that there was nothing to be done, resuscitation efforts were ceased and she was pronounced dead on the scene.
Dr. Yaron Muskat of Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba reported a 14-year-old female arrived in serious condition from a single gunshot wound that resulted in serious internal damage. She is now undergoing emergency surgery. At this time, she is listed in serious but stable condition.
The other victims of the attack were transported to Beilinson Hospital in Petach Tikvah. Included among the wounded is the husband of the deceased. His condition appears to be moderate. A hitchhiker in the vehicle is reported in serious condition. A fourth victim is reported in moderate-to-light condition.
