The navy is preparing for an escalation in terror, naval commander Major-General David Ben-Besht added. He said the navy is planning to use unmanned planes to guard the coast if the government carries out its plan to hand over the entire Gaza area to Arabs. When the plan was announced, defense officials stipulated that Israel would retain control over sea ports until the Palestinian Authority (PA) proves it is controlling terrorist activity. However, the government a few weeks ago began to concede the condition on the basis of hints that PA leaders will act against violence.

Maj.-Gen. Ben-Besht said the navy will need new security boats equipped with updated systems that will enable them to patrol closer to fishing boats. "We have to assume there will be more smuggling attempts from the sea after disengagement and the closing off of Gaza," he said.

Addressing a conference organized by a non-profit organization supporting the navy, Ben-Besht also revealed that the navy is developing newer and more exact weaponry and reconnaissance tools. The conference was covered by the official IDF magazine Bamahaneh.
