In celebration of the upcoming Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shvat (January 25th), known as the new year for trees, Gaza residents will be planting seedlings throughout the Israeli territory slated for expulsion. New trees will contribute to the environmental development of Jewish communities. Israel is the only country to boast a net increase in trees during the twentieth century.

Planting trees for future generations is a time honored tradition in the land of Israel. The Midrash Tanhuma Commentary on Leviticus cites, "Just as you entered the land and found plants that others had planted before you, so you too, plant for your sons. ... Just as he found that others had planted, he should continue to plant, even in old age."

Seedlings grown at the Gush Katif Nurseries will be planted in communities from Dugit in northern Gaza to Morag in the south of the strip. Organizers expect to plant thousands of trees this Tu B'Shvat.

Jews worldwide are invited to join in the project, and sponsor trees to be planted in village parks, residents' yards and IDF camps. Those who purchase the seedlings will receive certificates of appreciation from Gush Katif.
