Other MKs also are expected to sign, and the Knesset signatories are planning to visit Gush Katif next week, where they will publicly express their commitment to the struggle.
More than 100 public figures and Yesha (Judea, Samaria and Gaza) activists from around the country gathered in Jerusalem Thursday night as protest activity against the evacuation/retreat plan gains momentum.
On the agenda are protest activities against the disengagement/expulsion for the coming weeks and months under the motto "the transfer won't pass – we are all Gush Katif and Samaria." A large demonstration is planned for Sunday afternoon opposite the Defense Ministry offices in Tel Aviv.
The emergency meeting in Jerusalem Thursday night was held shortly after the 12 MKs announced that they had signed a proclamation in which they promised their physical support despite government plans to imprison anyone who resists expulsion.
The proclamation was initiated by MK Effie Eitam, leader of the National Religious Party, and was signed by his three of his five other party colleagues, MKs Yitzchak Levy, Nissan Slomiansky and Gila Finkelstein. Two Likud MKs, Yechiel Chazan and Yuli Edelstein, signed as well, as did the six remaining members of the National Union party: Benny Elon, Tzvi Hendel, Uri Ariel, Eliezer Cohen, Aryeh Eldad, and Yuri Stern.
"We, members of the Knesset of Israel," the declaration states, "commit to report on the day we are called to Gush Katif, and to bodily prevent the unethical expulsion of thousands of heroic and pioneering settlers. We promise to stand at the head of the camp, to embrace the residents with love, and to guarantee a determined battle on the ground for the preservation of the values of Zionism, ethics and democracy, without any violence, degradation or hatred towards the security forces."
At Thursday night's meeting, Hevron Hills Regional Council head Tzviki Bar-Chai said that the objective is to "return the decision to the people, even before the compensation/evacuation law is passed in the Knesset."
Pinchas Wallerstein, head of the Binyamin Regional Council, said, "The entire nationalist camp must see this as a Tzav Shmoneh, an emergency call-up order. Whoever can, should move now to Gush Katif or Samaria. Adults and youth must go door-to-door, canvassing people who are willing to say that they're ready to be called even if it means going to jail."
Volunteers may begin these house-to-house activities as early as tomorrow night. They are also preparing for a massive and extended sit-in outside the Knesset, set for two weeks from now, and demonstrations will be held at important Jerusalem intersections.
