Elbit Systems is developing a Digital Army Program (DAP) at the behest of Israel’s Defense Ministry, and the goal is to computerize all land forces operations - command, control and communications. The $200 million project will be introduced over a ten-year period.

Elbit plans on supplying the security forces with advanced integrated computerized systems on a macro level, that will also extend down the chain of command to every soldier in the field. The system will also facilitate the transmission of satellite and situational images in real-time. The single optic-fiber communications network will connect all deployed forces down to the level of the individual soldier, and will operate like an Internet search engine.

The project will equip most armored vehicles with communications and computer systems. In addition, all commanders and most Special Forces soldiers are to be equipped with hand-held PDA computers, which will provide commanders in the field with accurate, real-time information that will create a joint battle picture for all military forces in a combat arena.

Although much of Israel’s military technology comes from overseas, the DAP is completely Israeli. "The DAP is based on a variety of advanced technologies such as communications, hardware and software, which have been developed in-house," Joseph Ackerman, Elbit Systems' President and CEO told Israel21c.org.. "These technologies, combined with our accumulated experience in programs based on computerized communications and multidisciplinary integration, have positioned Elbit Systems as a world leader in the field."
