In the course of a predawn mission near the Karni Crossing, St.-Sgt. Nadav Kodinsky, 20, of Kiryat Gat was searching a booby-trapped chicken coop when the bomb detonated, killing him instantly.
As members of the elite Golani reconnaissance unit tried to evacuate his body, Arabs fired assault rifles and anti-tank missiles at them. Two soldiers were injured moderately and two were lightly injured. An exchange of fire ensued, during which the IDF unit identified and killed one of the Arab attackers.
Several hours later, an Israel Air Force helicopter killed a second terrorist who participated in the attack.
The attack took place just north of the Karni crossing, which regulates traffic between northern Arab-controlled Gaza and pre-1967 Israel. PA security forces did nothing to prevent the attack.
