The would-be neighborhood just outside N'vei Dekalim is named Tiferet Yisrael. It was established in memory of soldier Yisrael Lutati of N'vei Dekalim, who was murdered by terrorists who infiltrated Morag, and Tiferet Tratner, who was felled by an Arab-fired mortar shell in her home in N'vei Dekalim. Both murders occurred some two months ago.
Some 30 Golani soldiers arrived late Wednesday night to take the buildings down, clashing with neighborhood youth who arrived to defend the location. Some youths reported being hit, and torn shirts were also reported. The demolition of the two structures, including a wooden synagogue, was completed by 3 AM.
The HaTzofeh newspaper reported the story with the following biting headline:
"Glorious IDF Victory Over Three Youths, Outpost Taken Down."
The youths vowed to rebuild the structures, and as of today, the memorial neighborhood is once again standing. It has long been a Zionist theme that an "appropriate response" to the Arab war against Jews is to increase the Jewish presence in Israel.
Hebrew University was the scene of much pro-Gush Katif activity today - known as "Orange Day" in honor of the color chosen to symbolize the anti-disengagement campaign. Wearing orange shirts, student members of "orange cells" from all around the country distributed pamphlets and gathered signatures for petitions against the expulsion plan.
Among their gimmicks was the distribution of orange ices with the motto, "Freezing the Disengagement Plan: Students Don't Detach from the Land." MKs Uzi Landau (Likud) and Yuli Tamir (Labor) are scheduled to debate each other in the course of the Hebrew U Orange Day activities.
