Susie and Rabbi Stewart Weiss, whose son Ari was killed in Shechem two years ago in a gun battle with Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists, recalled how much Ari’s fellow soldiers looked forward to receiving a hearty home-cooked meal when his mother would pay the unit a visit.
And so, this past week, they decided to launch “Ochel Ari”, or Ari’s Food, by preparing and delivering 1000 deli boxes to soldiers serving with the Givati brigade in Gaza and with the Nahal brigade in Jenin and Hebron. In addition to a roll, salami, pickles, a Coke, chips and a muffin, each package included a flashlight and a hand-written card from a grade-school student expressing gratitude to the soldiers for the service they perform in defense of the country.

In light of the positive response they received from IDF officials as well as from the soldiers who received the food boxes, the Weiss family plans to continue to distribute meals to soldiers on a regular basis.
The project is being carried out under the auspices of the Ohel Ari Jewish Heritage Center and Moadon L’Chayal being built in Ra’anana in Ari Weiss’ memory.
