It has rained only once so far this year, leading to flooding and road-closings in the south and with heavy hail in some areas. The upcoming weather, however, will be the year's first storm and will mark the change in seasons. The rain is expected to last until the end of the week.

Winter rain has always been seen as a sign of blessing in the Land of Israel. The level of the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee), Israel's largest reservoir, now stands at 210.79 meters below sea level, about 1.9 meters (75 inches) below the optimal level. It reached the maximum level last April, following a particularly rainy winter. Another such winter has been forecasted for this year. Each Kinneret centimeter represents some 1.7 million cubic meters of water.
