Golan Heights Regional Council head Eli Malka dispatched a letter to his constituent towns calling for support of the Jews from Gush Katif, who are slated to be uprooted from their homes in Prime Minister Sharon's Disengagement Plan. The council has organized a solidarity trip to Gush Katif, scheduled for this coming Monday.
In his letter, Malka wrote: "Over the years, we, residents of the Golan, have waged a public, democratic struggle worthy of imitation; and today, we are a source of strength and a shining example for the residents of Gush Katif. It is our moral duty to stand by them, with advice and encouragement in mutual commitment."
Malka noted that these are difficult days for the residents of Gush Katif, whom he referred to as "pioneers who turned a wasteland into a flowering and productive strip of settlement." Malka added, "In addition to their daily exposure to mortars and Kassam rockets, they face expulsion from their homes and destruction of their lives' work. We call on the residents of the Golan to join us for the tour, the goal of which is strengthening the residents of Gush Katif."
When the issue of retreat from the Golan Heights was raised by Israeli leaders in the 1990s, the Golan residents, along with help from concerned citizens throughout the country, waged a major public campaign to prevent withdrawal. The central slogan was "The People Are With the Golan."
